What does it take to make a powerful documentary film?

The filmmaking process must reflect a deep understanding of the subject. It does this through building trust with the people involved and being sensitive to the intrusiveness of a camera and crew. Most importantly, the filmmaker must know how to take a complex situation and turn it into a story that is accessible, compelling, and honest.

TSF's feature documentaries have been screened in festivals around the world and broadcast on public television in the United States. We take the skills we’ve learned making these films and apply them to those we create for our clients.

RAISE THE ROOF

A Trillium Studios Production

The intricately crafted wooden synagogues of 18th-century Poland inspired artists Rick and Laura Brown of Handshouse Studio to embark on a 10-year pursuit—to reconstruct the elaborate roof and painted ceiling of the Gwoździec synagogue.

Trillium Studios produced Raise the Roof, a feature documentary film, embraced by festival audiences around the world. The award winning film was broadcast nationwide on public television in the U.S.  Production began in 2007, with several trips to Poland in the years that followed.  It premiered in 2015 to sold out screenings.

THE GIFT HORSE

A Trillium Studios Production

In the fall of 2015, Rick and Laura Brown offered a new class at the Massachusetts College of Art and Design. The objective: to research and build models of the Trojan Horse based on text, historic images and interpretation of the Ancient Greek mythic narrative of the Trojan War. The models generated from the class would be used as studies for the future full scale wooden horse to be built in Greece and exhibited at a world-class museum.

The Gift Horse, a 54-minute television documentary in progress, is being produced by Trillium Studios. For more information, please visit the Trojan Horse Project.
